In this article, I’m going to share a very easy recipe for a DIY cleansing oil. I’m sure you’ve heard multiple times that double cleansing is the ultimate key to clean and healthy skin. A good oil cleanser seems like a miracle solution for many skin problems.

But there’s one problem: oil cleanser is insanely expensive for something that runs out so quickly. In my experience, I had to buy a new bottle of oil cleanser every month. Spending 12 to 15 dollars per bottle doesn’t seem like a big deal—until you add up the expenses for the year. Ladies, are we really spending nearly 200 bucks a year on… oil in a pretty bottle?
Here comes your super-easy tutorial! You’ll learn how to make a cheap, long-lasting, and, most importantly, effective DIY cleansing oil or DIY oil makeup remover. Oh, and of course, it’s clean and non-toxic.
How to find your perfect oil?
According to your skin type and your budget, you can figure out the perfect oil to use as your base:
Oils for Oily/Acne-Prone Skin
Jojoba Oil: Mimics skin’s natural sebum, helps regulate oil production.
Grapeseed Oil: Lightweight, non-comedogenic, and has antibacterial properties. It can be drying for some, so if you want to try it, mix it in a 1:2 ratio with other oils.
Oils for Dry Skin
Sweet Almond Oil: Rich in vitamin E, deeply hydrating.
Avocado Oil: Nourishes and repairs dry, flaky skin.
Argan Oil: Moisturizing and packed with antioxidants.
Castor Oil (Personal Favorite): Deeply hydrating, versatile, and can be used in various ways, from cleansing to spot treatment.
Oils for Combination Skin
Rosehip Oil: Balances oil production and provides hydration.
Hemp Seed Oil: Lightweight and non-comedogenic, balances skin.
Surely enough, you can try and mix different options. I even tried to do it using a sunflower seed oil I got straight from my kitchen with a bit of castor oil added. And it was just as great in terms of efficiency not to mention it was cost-effective to the max. The majority of brands that make those cleansing oils use cheap rapeseed oil as a base. A homemade version is even better, where you can choose from a range of different oils that work best for your skin.
Ingredient for a DIY Oil Cleanser
- Oil of your choice;
- Any cleaning face gel you have around; A very good versatile product to try is a Bioderma Atoderm Shower Oil which turns soapy once mixed with water which can be used for everything, face wash, body wash, and of course you can add it to your oil of choice to create a DIY cleansing oil at home:

That’s it! Just two ingredients you likely already own. The face cleansing gel ensures an emulsifying formula, making it easy to rinse off with water after cleansing.
DIY Process
- Take an old bottle of cleansing oil or face cleanser with a pump. Ensure the bottle is thoroughly disinfected and completely dry.
- Fill 90% of the bottle with your chosen oil and the remaining 10% with your cleansing gel.
- Shake it well and leave it on your bathroom counter for a couple of days.
After a few days, the mixture will develop a lovely emulsion texture. Once it turns milky in color, it’s ready to use as the first step in your cleansing routine.
How to Use
- Take a few pumps of the product and warm it up between your palms until it feels like oil.
- Ensure both your hands and face are completely dry.
- Massage the oil onto your face thoroughly for at least a minute.
- Add a small amount of warm water to your palms and continue massaging to emulsify the oil.
- Rinse off with water, and for optimal results, cleanse again with a gel cleanser.
Making your own cleansing oil isn’t just a fun DIY project; it’s also a smart way to save money and ensure you’re using skin-friendly, non-toxic ingredients. By tailoring the oils to your skin’s needs, you’re creating a product that works better than most store-bought options. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing exactly what’s in the products you’re using on your face.
So, give it a try! Your skin—and your wallet—will thank you.
